Three positions within your lane

A single lane is wide enough for a motorcycle to ride in different spots within it: left, centre, or right. Riders choose a position based on what helps them see and be seen, avoid hazards like potholes or oil patches, and keep a safety cushion from other vehicles.

Why lane position matters

Changing position within the lane makes you more visible to drivers around you and gives you room to react. Riding in the centre, where cars' tires often drop oil and grease, can make the surface slipperier, especially in light rain, so many riders favour the sides of the lane instead.
